El Cuélebre
This sculpture was chosen among three proposals submitted by different artists to the Sordo Madaleno architectural firm for the remodeling of the Asturian Sports Center, located south of Mexico City in 2007, and was later approved by the Council of the Asturian Center. The piece was placed in 2008.
In order to determine the concept on which this piece would be worked, an investigation of the region of Asturias, as well as the Asturian Sports Club, was carried out. It is from then on that this sculptural proposal based on concepts such as unity, dynamism and strength is developed. These concepts in turn are directly related to the homeland, the family and sports. The piece is seven meters high and is designed in steel plate to reflect the force; emerges from the water on a marble gravel platform and the lines of its contour unfold to achieve continuous movement and dynamism. Its shape is the synthesis of the abstraction of an animal "Cuélebre" from Asturian mythology that means dragon serpent that lives in the depths of the caves guarding treasures.
